2018 Rebel Air Ride Suspension Nightmare

9751 Views 16 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  stevefo
I bought my Rebel brand new with 26 miles on it in December 2018. By March 2019, the air ride suspension began to fail. I’d get the famous “Immediate air suspension repair or service required” notification and the truck would be stuck. When this happens, the truck handles terribly and has no shock cushioning at all, I felt like I’d have spine trauma by the time I got where I was going! The service department at the dealership I bought it at (Collierville Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram) wouldn’t return any of my calls or emails so I took it to Gossett in Memphis who, as it turns out, is the Master repair center for West TN, and it was in and out of the shop beginning in April 2019 through late July 2019. After they (finally) replaced many of the components, the truck once again drove, and handled, like a dream.
Fast forward to 2020. Less than a year later, I get in the truck one June morning and get the dreaded “immediate air suspension repair or service required” notification again and here we are in August and it’s a broken mess. The thing’s so crazy and unpredictable... at times the front end is so low the fenders almost touch the tires, other times the driver side only is lowered so it’s all crooked. The one consistent thing is the hella rough ride.
I reached out to Gossett service department needing it repaired again and due to the COVID situation I was told they aren’t taking appointments, that I could try to drop it off on a Saturday (first come first serve) and they’d get to it whenever they could. NOT what I wanted to hear... I explained that I’d been through arbitration with FCA last year and they denied my claim (even with 4 consecutive months in shop and out of service) and I just really need it to be drivable but no luck getting it in.
At this point, I’d like to have the air suspension converted to coil over and have read some forum posts on doing this but I’ve also seen a lot of discussion on how it won’t work. Since the truck’s still under warranty, I know the dealership won’t do the work for me but I could care less about the warranty now, all that is to me is a no charge repair that’s never going to be a final solution, plus God only knows how much more time out of service. I feel trapped into keeping this truck, I can’t pass it off to some other unknowing soul plus it’s got another couple years before it’s paid for.
Does anyone have experience with converting to coil over on the 2018 Rebel? I’d love to get rid of that air ride system completely and ideally, I’d like to put a 4” lift in it and upgrade to 35” tires. Can this be done or would I be getting into an expense greater than the value of my truck?

Converted mine a year after I bought it and I dunno what you've been reading on it not working sounds like a bunch of people not knowing what they're talking about......
Either way everythings a direct fit no fabrication needed if it fits an 09 to 18 1500 itll fit your truck only difference will be a red light telling you to service the air ride but thats easily removed with alfaobd and in your case since its a 2018 you'll also need a bypass harness to make changes to the bcm

Thank you so much for responding! If you don’t mind me asking, did you put a coil kit in yours and would I be able to find a parts list somewhere for what I’d need to convert mine? I’ve been shopping parts and just don’t know if the best way to go is find a kit or buy separate components... I do want at least 2.5” in lift and am not sure if just a conversion ‘kit’ would do the trick.
there is a kit I forget what its called but I just ended up going rancho all around
There's my post the parts list is somewhere on the first page

Thanks Vshni, this is super helpful. I’m new to this forum, just happened across it in my search for a solution... there’s not much out there posted on converting so I consider myself lucky to have landed here. I combed over that entire thread you linked me to and found answers to most of my questions. You’ve given me real hope that there’s a fix for this, I do love my truck and hated the thought of getting rid of it. Thank you!

No problem I try to help everyone out with the air ride so I put up all the info I could on swapping it out but some fair warning alot of shops won't touch our trucks for the conversion since they don't understand how it works if you run into that i can give the number of the shop that did mine theyll answer any question they have

Contacted one of the mechanics at our local Memphis 4 Wheel Auto shop on Friday, mechanic wasn’t sure if he could do it but did say he’d research it so I’ll share what you and others have done with him. It’s so weird that so many mechanics (dealership included) get freaked over working on a Rebel, shoot - I thought it was more of a trim package than anything but I reckon there’s major build differences or these guys wouldn’t act like it’s an alien LOL!!
Yeah alot of the dealers here told me it would cost more than what my truck was worth one place refused to give me part numbers for the rear coils since their techs said it was impossible to remove the air ride but since I've had it swapped out ive been to alot of dealerships and all of them have asked to buy my truck since it must be a headache in winter and I've told em I got rid of the air ride so I'm keeping it and now there is couple of em out here that actually to the conversion now

Vshni knows what he’s talking about. He’ll shoot you straight from what I’ve seen. I pulled my air ride out less than a month after buying mine with only 8700 miles on the odometer. I was having issues with alfaobd not connecting to my truck from my pc. Vshni jumped right in to help. You’ll get more mechanics tell you it can’t be done despite the thousands of us that have done it. I actually had a custom shops head mechanic argue with me about whether or not the truck had air tanks under it. He then got pissed after looking under the rear and seeing them. I felt trapped for a moment as well because I knew the work could be done but I couldn’t physically do it at the time having just had surgery and everyone saying it’s impossible. It’s not, it’s simple. When you find the right person to do the work it’ll be worth it. I’ve nearly completed my build and since adding the new unlocked pcm and tune Along with the bds lift with coilovers, 37s a hidden winch, etc, etc etc the trucks a beast and has taken down two 1st gen raptors and held its own against a 2nd gen for a good shot. Don’t let the naysayers get you down or pressure you into sticking with the air ride or trading it in and taking a huge loss just to buy another truck. Swap it out and sell any components still good. I made a little over $2,000 on my air ride stuff on eBay. Long story short, it can be done, it should be done “in my opinion” and you’ll be glad when it is done and you have a great truck that no longer makes you worry whether or not it’ll be drivable in the morning.

Man, that is one tough looking truck! Kudos on all the upgrades!
I married into a Chrysler family, my father-in-law retired from Chrysler so most of us own their products. I gotta say I was truly shocked, not to mention disappointed, that they denied my arbitration claim to replace the truck but did offer us $2000.00 which was laughable at the time but in retrospect, that 2 grand would have covered some of the parts so we should have jumped on it. This truck is the 4th Ram pickup I’ve owned since 2002 and all of her predecessors were dependable. This one’s my favorite of all the vehicles I’ve owned so I’m definitely not going to get rid of it after learning this fix can be done.
I too want a suspension lift that’ll accomodate 35 - 37” tires. My hubby and brother-in-law will be doing the work but we aren’t sure if other modifications will have to be made if we lift it more than 3-4 inches (drive shaft for instance). Did you have to make changes other than the suspension components with that bds lift and 37’s?

Thanks! I’m a mopar guy myself, it was meant to be a replica of the TRX concept truck and then went in a different direction after having issues getting the fiberwerx fenders and rambox rear to match up cleanly so I scrapped that plan and just focused on making it a naturally aspirated rebel to take on 1st gen raptors on their own turf. It’s fun when a Ram has to recover a Raptor!. On to your questions: The bds kit 671f has the coilovers and rear springs included. Only other thing you need are rear spring isolators. Basically little rubber pads that sit on top of the rear coil springs. They were $18 from the dealership but can be ordered from numerous parts stores. The coilover kit is adjustable from 4-6”s and comes preset at 6” of lift. The kit comes standard with 3” lift springs. That will leave the truck level. The 5” springs can be substituted for $50 to give you a almost factory rake. No one will mention this to you but it’s important to decide if you want the rake or not before hand because to buy the 5” bds lift springs after the fact will run you around $900. There’s also an option for a 2” lift block. You don’t want that. That’s for trucks with factory coils that want the Cali lean. So decide, level truck equals 3” standard kit or factory stance equals 5” substitute. Once the lift is done, remove the air ride / compressor fuses and you start the truck. truck cycles through the start up screen, you’ll get 1 “ding” and a brief “service air ride message”. That can be fixed with alfaobd, where you go into the body computer and tell the truck it never had air ride, no more error message! Alfaobd can do a lot more cool things for the truck so it’s a great tool to have and vshni can tell you all about that. It’s just a matter of deciding your ready to cut your air lines and be done with the headache. If you can, lift the bed a little and remove the air tanks while your doing everything else. Then pull the compressor that’s behind the passenger rear tire by the bumper. Cleaned up a little those could get you around $500-$800 on eBay. Each air ride sensor $55-$75. Front air struts $400-$800 for the pair. Rear air bags $250- $400pair. Rear shocks $50-$90pair. Ram air ride parts are like gold on eBay due to all the failures and dealer price gouging. All of my parts sold to different buyers and all within 2weeks. Then sell your factory wheels/ tires locally on Facebook market, if you still have decent tread on the tires, $600-$1200. After all that the price for bds/ fox coilovers doesn’t seem so bad. Now as far as 35s or 37s. 37s require slight trimming of the plastic wheel well liner which is no big deal. A razor knife cuts it pretty easily.

Sorry I forgot driveshafts and height over 3-4 inches. Nope, nothing to worry about! Bds has everything taken care of. Check out the kit, and there website. Look at the ram 1500 w/o air ride and compare because that’s what you’d be getting and once the air lines are cut that’s what you’ll have lol

Thanks for sharing! I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to know there’s a solution. Thinking I needed to get rid of my truck was depressing. It’s gonna save me a ton of cash just swapping out the suspension as opposed to a new truck!

gotta say that's a bloody nice truck you did an awesome job with that thing
Thank you!! I’m still glad I chose the Rebel everyday. I like Raptors but I love the look their owners make when the “wannabe” truck beats them off-road

Vshni's solution works. So does air delete.ca.

Anyone who tells you it can't be done is 100 percent full of it-up to an including FCC/FCA themselves. I followed Vishni's part list and a half day later the air suspension problems were gone. It is easier to remove air suspension from the Rebel than it is to change out front coil over struts.
I will say this is the last FCC/FCA product I will buy. The air suspension was one issue. I am now having to replace the the radio because of the screen delaminating and - and-swap out the exhaust manifolds because of broken bolts and warping. These are all easily remedied by FCC/FCA. But no...no problems. Nothing to see here.

I have a 2108 so it doesn't have much of the electronic bs on it-which is the only reason why I am keeping it. Love the truck, but my lord they could do be doing such a better job.

For the record, my dealership has been awesome.
